Having purchased my PC last year, with fantastic specs which includes very fast quad core processor, Ram to feed its speed and a hard drive that holds more than I can hurl at it I have been looking at things that might improve the PC I already have.
Firstly If your processor is still cutting it with the market and is more than capable of working with the software you are using you don’t have to consider starting all over again. If it isn’t you may want to consider a new mother board and processor. Normally however once you begin down this road it is possibly worth just purchasing a new desktop as the separates frequently come in at more than a new whole computer.
Second if we take it that your processor is fast enough, pack in the Ram it gives your processor the room to work at maximum efficiency. Look into which board you have and type the details into Google and you will then be able to find what Ram your System can use (the price of Ram has reduced by so much it’s of value investing in it).
Thirdly if you have a large collection of music or imagery that you want to store, change, access, play then have a separate extra speedy drive to allow you to access your data quickly don’t be tricked by big disc volumes which have a rotation and read speed RPM of 5400 not acceptable, 7400 exceptable and 9600 Yeha!. These 1st three are things that will influence your every day appreciation of computing.
Fourthly If you have an old PC that is great, but no longer cuts the mustard, you don’t have to get rid of it you can have it as an secondary system that you access when you require the data stored on that system and let it run software behind the scenes without effecting your new PC in anyway. The use of a KVM Switch is brilliant for this as it allows you to flick between computers using the same Keyboard, Mouse and Monitor to use both systems at the click of a button.
Make sure you have the best Broadband connection you can afford. You don’t have to have the large file through put of an Austin Hughes Rack Mount Server to require a download speed that wont look like its frozen when you download pictures, videos or songs. Look online to discover a provider in your area, then find out what the maximum download speed your telephone line can actually provide, instead of the one proposed by the provider (it just saves you handing out loads of cash for download rates you will never reach) if you can link in unlimited download amounts to this all the better though most people get caught by the fair use policy if you use the internet a lot.
Hopefully this will have helped and I will provide more at a later date.
