Are You Using Linkbait?
Linkbait is a popular term among internet marketers. Some say it’s a good thing, some say it’s a bad thing. If you’re a blogger, are you using linkbait properly, if at all?.
What is Linkbait?
Linkbait is any blog post or article that can compel people to react. Over the internet, a reaction means discussion on facebook, on blogs, and on twitter. With the way discussions are done over the internet right now, they are likely to write about your post on their own websites, or any page online where they can voice an opinion. If your blog post is interesting enough, people cannot help but say something about it on twitter, facebook etc.. A linkbait is an article or a comment that attracts traffic to your blog.
So, is linkbaiting a good thing?
Whether or not linkbait is good or bad, shady or perfectly ethical depends on whether the article is within the niche of the blog or not. If you have a blog that most parents read, talking about a controversial parenting topic is a good linkbait. But if you have a parenting blog and then you suddenly talk about the latest showbiz gossip that doesn’t interest your readers, your linkbait isn’t very effective. But then again, some people will argue that anything that draws attention, whether negative or positive, is good linkbait.
Linkbait Writing 101
There are article types that make people link back. How-to guides with high value content can wow people. Controversial opinion articles that tackle a new angle are always popular. “Exposure” articles get people curious but could seriously compromise your credibility.
If you’re the daring type, you can write inflammatory pieces to grab the attention of thousands, if not millions, of internet goers. It’s like the tabloids that we secretly buy from the convenience store when no one’s looking.
The only rule of thumb to linkbaiting is this… always be accountable for anything you write about online.
Use “Link Love” as Linkbait
Have you ever heard of the phrase “link love”? Sometimes, it’s the best form of linkbait around. Linking to someone else’s article instantly alerts the other blogger. In addition, there are some blogging platforms that automatically place the link to your “reaction” post under the article you linked to.
A blog is an interaction with other people. There will be people who will like your blog, there will be people who will hate it, and there are those who are indifferent to things you write. Your blog will start to become popular when people from all over start to visit and communicate with you. Being a blogger, you should always write posts that other people can proudly share on other sites. Keep your audience in mind when link baiting.
